A pH Check That Knows What Kind of Church Is Taking It

The instrument does not change. What changes is which of its eighteen subscales a congregation is asked, and what its scores are reported out of.

What to Look At

The questions this page exists to answer. Everything else is scaffolding.

  1. Does the setup screen ask the right questions?Six switches decide what a congregation is asked. Are any of them the wrong question, and is anything missing that a real church would need to say about itself?
  2. Is a default ever offensive?A plant starts with children and youth switched off. A church that runs a thriving one switches it on in a second, but it had to see the default first. Is that the right trade, or should every switch start as an open question?
  3. Does the changing denominator read as honest or as gaming?Turn a switch off and Missional Identity drops from 240 to 220 in front of you. That is the point of the whole design, and it is also the thing somebody will reasonably ask about.
  4. Is 5 Voices required for the right people?Staff and elected leaders must, ministry volunteers are nudged, everybody else is offered. Nobody has to.
  5. Would you hand this to a church?Not the visual design, which is scaffolding. The sequence: setup, who you are, 5 Voices, the survey, what happens next.

What This Is

The pH Check is a validated instrument. Whole-instrument reliability .97, subscale reliabilities .83 to .94, normed on 3,892 people across 58 churches. None of that is in question and none of it changes here.

What is in question is the administration. Every one of the 115 fields on the live survey is required and none offers Not Applicable, so a congregation with no youth ministry is compelled to take a position on nine statements describing one, and a church younger than five years is asked what it has done in the last five.

The Congregation on This Walkthrough

Bellweather Covenant Church in Kessler Bend, planted March 2024, about 74 adults. Invented down to the town. Its participation target of 60 is real arithmetic from the instrument's own published table.
